These paintings were inspired by my visit to Bangladesh in December 2008, during historic elections that took place after seven years. Dhaka was festooned with black and white election posters which were strung between telephone poles and buildings. The posters contained the symbols for each party, such as boat, rice, and key. Election day was a joyful occasion and huge numbers came out to vote, including record numbers of women and young people. My paintings try to show some of energy and excitement of the days leading up to the election. Election 3 puts a mobile phone on the election posters, poking a bit of fun at the current mobile phone craze everywhere in the world.
